Burnout, the “physical or mental collapse caused by overwork or stress,” is unfortunately common. Though a familiar to many condition, it is still on the rise – especially amongst younger professionals. Having owned a business – or two – I have come to pinpoint some key practices that can be associated with a burnout. So, to keep from feeling overloaded here is a list of habits to avoid:
1. Always saying ‘yes’
‘No’ is a powerful word you should use. Though it can be hard – especially to some – to turn down an opportunity or a request for help, it is essential to manage your time wisely and that means occasionally saying ‘no.’ Piling on endless projects and tasks will only maximize your stress – not your productivity.
2. Always multitasking
You are in a meeting with your team, checking your phone for notifications, and preparing for an upcoming client meeting making mental checklists. It may seem like you are being efficient, but you are probably frying your brain, and not performing at your best in any of the tasks you are juggling. Learn to immerse yourself in the task at hand, and not only will you be more effective doing things in batches, but it will also be less tiring.
3. Never unplugging
Checking your text messages every 10 mins, responding to emails over the weekend, and generally always being reachable is a curse not a blessing. Your mind needs time to recharge, and a constant connection to work does not allow for this. Outside of work hours, take the time to unplug, look around you and smell the roses – even if you have to teach your colleagues, employees or even managers to give you the space to do so.
4. Spending every weekend on the couch
Though it is very tempting – especially if you live in a cold country – to stay in and relax on the couch over the weekend, it is important to mix things up and get out. Spending time in nature and/or socializing with people that make you smile are essential in keeping you balanced. Never underestimate the importance of being active and having fun!
5. Not taking time to evaluate
We all can get lost in our daily routines – rushing to achieve goals and meet deadlines. It is thus important to remind yourself to regularly take a step back and evaluate: are your goals still in line with what you want, are you on the path you want to be? People can change and new experiences can make us re-evaluate what is important in life and work, so it is crucial to checkin with yourself from time to time and know that you are on the right track.
